T.J Carlson
@tj_carlson

After serving as a volunteer with FCA, TJ joined FCA as a staff member in 2011. TJ's first passion is Jesus Christ but he also loves students and athletes. Serving as chaplain, T.J. serves SDSU players and coaches, and their families in whatever capacity they need. Through leading Bible Studies for coaches and for athletes, pre-game chapels, coordinating the Jackrabbit FCA Huddle and one on one counseling, he desires to be a blessing to the Jackrabbits. The foundation is what he calls the “ministry of presence,” whether encouragement, counsel, or simply a sounding board, players, their parents, and coaches know that God has placed him here to be a resource for them.

 I grew up on a farm in Howard, SD and was active in various sports in high school along with our local FCA huddle. I then

went on to South Dakota State University where I received a degree in Early Childhood Education. I met my husband, TJ, during my time at SDSU and we have lived in Brookings since then.

For the last few years, I’ve volunteered and helped TJ with his ministry. I recently joined FCA as part time staff and am excited about the work God is doing at SDSU. We have a wonderful group of ladies involved in our huddle and I am so blessed to be able to impact them for Christ. We’ve formed lasting bonds with many of the athletes and are so thankful to be involved with them during a very important stage in their lives.

Our FCA ministry is a family affair and our kids, Noah and Sidney, enjoy spending time at sporting events cheering on their SDSU student athletes and friends. TJ and I are so grateful for the positive Christian influences and role models they are to our children. Our family loves all things Jackrabbits but we also root for the Denver Broncos and Colorado Rockies. We just wish Colorado wasn’t so far away so we could attend games!

Some of the greatest memories in my life come from the playgrounds, ball fields, and locker rooms, where I competed in athletics. My coaches along the way, especially in high school and college, had a tremendous impact on me and the way I approach life. As an athlete, coach, parent, sports chaplain, and even as a fan—I have seen firsthand the power of athletics to influence and transform lives.

What if sports could be a doorway to release the transforming power of the gospel of Jesus Christ to our communities? This is precisely the mission of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Join me as we minister to and through area coaches and athletes of all ages in Northeast South Dakota.
